I would like to express my condolencies to Keith,s family after their sad loss. I did attend the funeral and it were a terriffic turnout for Keith, unfortunately i had to dash back over the Pennines as i were working a late shift. I am sure everybody would have given Keith a good send off as that is the way he would have wanted. You will be missed terribly mate. God bless. Ken

hi caroline i did meet brian tabiner a couple of times when he came to visit tab at eastwell lodge he seemed a very pleasant young man but i didnt really get to know him as he came to spend time with his brother not the staff.tab was a pleasure to look after he was a bit of a joker always making us laugh he was a kind loving lad and very involved with the church at carleton where as you know he was buried. on saturdays and in the school holidays tab worked on a fruit and veg stall inside pontefract market hall to earn extra spending money as he had won a special prize at the boys school to go to the olympic games in munich germany 1974 we were all very proud of him.he had a fantastic time.i hope you find these bits of information interesting to you and your son .Aa

May i take this time to reflect on the recent event?I felt part of one huge family no one can deny that fact.We were part of a special family,no matter what time span we were in our home,i hope you enjoyed my poetry and the dance demos. Many could not attend for one reason or another, there are many i can recall who seem ashamed that they were in the home.REMEMBER it was not our fault we were put away,we were the victims of circumstance beyond our childhood grasp.I FOR ONE AM PROUD OF THE INSTITUTION CALLED CARLTON HOMES LOVE AND KISSES TO YOU ALL XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Can I echo everybody's kind words. It was a great success this year. The room was perfect size for a great ambience. Plus the newbies added extra spice this year with out doubt. The landlord / lady (Patrick & Janet were great hosts). Great job by Ken (DJ & organisor), Nigel PC & tech support. The entertainment, John B, poetry & dancing, Joan B & Ken again singing. The variety made it very special. Finaly can I thank everybodies genourosity Sat (especially Ken & Mick). I barely put my hand in my pocket, except for our Joany :-). Look forward to next year already.

Hello again Pauline,i like to think i have a good memory of days gone by and remember most things that i encountered during my time in the home, i cannot recall taking anyone to Tanshelf, i would like to take the credit for making your time a little happier for you, but as i said i may have done but just can't remember that, i dont remember any other Marylyn being there the same time as i was, you said you were 5 years old at the time, well that would have made me 11 going on 12, auntie Hilda was still in home 4 when i left, and yes i went into home 3 when i was 11, from home 4 which i have to say i hated it in there, it wasn't untill the lovely Auntie Frances took me into her home that i really started to enjoy my life, she turned everything round for me and still to this day i treasure her, so Pauline it could have been me and i hope it was, i'd love to have had a part in trying to make you happy ,and if it wasn't me, then it doesn't matter because that's what this site does, brings us all together again with our memories and the bond of being in Eastwell Lodge, take care Pauline and hope to see you next time.x

Just a brief message to you all, i thought the Prince of Wales Club (POW) turned out to be a real hit on Saturday night and would hope to be going back there again. Thanks again Nigel as i have just this minute seen the photo,s you have put in the gallery, great work mate. To Pauline Stoner i,m sorry i did,nt getto speak with you at length as i would have been able to put you in the picture a little more regarding our Marylyn who you think you remembered, if you wish to get in touch with me via email here it is, i dont think Nigel will mind kenfgriffin@hotmail.co.uk, i will try and enlighten you a bit more. Once again George cheers mate for being there and dealing with all the so called newbies, lets hope next time we will have a lot more attending, although i did think we managed to create a pretty good atmosphere with the gang we had there. Nice to see Stan Briggs again, thought he looked brilliant, Bill Baines, Kevin Storey, Anette Faulding, Auntie Julie, Stoner sisters i do hope you can make the next reunion where i am sure there will be other folk there that you remember. Thanks to each and everyone of you who helped it be such a great night. Finally to Pat the (Steward) who without him none of this would have been possible thanks a bundle and like i said to him we would love to go back there, he replied, any time you want. Cheers Pat...Ken Griffin

Hi Marylyn,
we were there from 1964-1966 in home 4. I was 5 when i went in and remember the nice Marylyn that took me places was older. She took me to tanshelf to my uncle dick and auntie vals who always gave us loads of sweets.. My sister was Karen and she was 6 when we went in. We remember an auntie Jackie who was a young woman , do you remember her. Do you remember when the intruder got in to home 4. I think you may have been in home 3. Hope its you cos you were so kind to us as we were so unhappy.

Hello everyone
I had hoped to join the reunion on Saturday and was looking forward to it, however a relative has died and this weekend I and my sister travel to Wales for the funeral. We had looked at the possibility of going via Ponte and spending time at the reunion however it is not working out for us with the travelling.
I have received such loving warm invitations that I thought I have to attend this reunion. I am really disappointed that I won't be with you.Hopefully I will be able to attend the next reunion.
Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful evening!
Love

Just come across this site whilst researching my family history; I was in Eastwell Lodge between (approx) 1952 & 1959. These dates are vague because I have not traced any official records etc. My sister Sandra was also with me. We were adopted and lived with our new family (Hudson) in Chequerfield nearby. My adoptive aunt lived in Carleton so I still was aware of the home. Any information is of immense value to me from that period. My memory is scant to say the least. I intend attending the reunion on 19th June. Many thanks for a great site. Sorry I am unable to contribute to it. Dave Hudson

Hi, i feel as i need to explain reason for switch from Grange to Prince of Wales Working Mens Club on Ferrybridge Road, Fernhill, Pontefract. The Grange were not very co- operative with us re the use of the (small) room, only one available, they wantedto charge me by the hour with no extension to the bar times and we were restricted to what time we could have the room from. I did,nt find them very accommodating at all, hence looked elsewhere. A mate of mine Raymond Dunkley put me on to the POW Club and they are ttally the opposite, room from whatever time we want, can have a drink till whatever timwe want and best of all (FREE) i had to go for it. I have never been in this place before but somehow i get the feeling we will be ok here, the way i see it is this, i really dont think it would make any difference where we met up as us Carleton Homes kids would make it a success wherever. I just hope my favourite former member of staff Auntie Francis can make the trip as i feel a lot of us kids owed her a lot and most certainly looked up to, she were always there for you i am sure i dont only speak for myself when i say it would be the icing on the cake so to speak and i feel it would be somehow quite fitting for her to be there. We all want to see you Auntie Francis, just one more time so do your very best please. I feel as if i have filled you allin re venue so do your best on the 19th June and turn up. See you all then Ken

hi chris i have just read the extra memories you have added and it brought back some more memories of the lovley times i had in the hall as we called it .we had parties and fancy dress competitions plus each house made a guy fawkes for bonfire night and they were judged in the hall for the winner. we had to guard our guys as kids from the other houses would sneak into our house and pinch either the whole guy or take something off it it was a laugh though and done in good fun. i would have worked at e.w.lodge just for my keep if they had kept it open i started there new years day 1968 and left just before it closed.hope to be at next re-union liz.

Although I was not in carleton homes I went to carleton junior school between 1952 till 1964......most of the 100 kids at this school came from the home and whenever I had a birthday party my father got permission from the super for several of my friends from the home to come to it on Rookhill Road....I am unfortunately unable to remember any names but if anyone remembers me I would be pleased to hear from them....I was born in 1947

Hi Liz, That's a shame you might not make it this Sat after all the great work you did with your stunning list of names. Aunty Pat (Egley) added one more.. Aunty Pat Pantry home1 but it might be before your time. As Eastwell Lodge was originally built on Catholic faith & they believe in miracles, you never know your health might improve by then. Liz...I remember you kitting me out with clothes from the stores up the lane and I am sure I came into contact with you again during my teeneage years...Was it at Kettlethorpe Road when I once visited??? Maybe I have got that bit wrong but I definitely remember seeing you again at some point.
Sue...Did you have really long hair at one point? I'm sure I once went to your house too. My "curls" as you so kindly put it were more like a rats nest from my recolection...haha. They took several years to tame! :-)

Hello Aunty Francis, I've wanted to say this ever since Ken & I first got in touch by fluke in 2006. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your fantastic collection of pictures you scanned & sent to Ken. We used these as the basis of a great film show at our 2nd reunion in 2008. I even uploaded them up on you tube. This year at the Carleton Grange it's our ambition to put names to these pics. We have a few (eg Andrea & Stephen Lupton). Take care George x (PS I should have been on the great recent picture of the Boot in the garden of home5 1969. I remember it very well)

Thanks Liz, I really needed cheering up & your kind words did the trick. I was admiring your great 1970's colour pics. I believe your memories are better than mine. hi ken thanks for passing that message on from auntie frances. i lost touch with her a long time ago but have thought about her a lot over the years.when she went to work in liverpool i went to visit her.i used to think she had magic powers as all the children did exactly what she asked of them. i wanted to be just like her.confession time. she taught me so much about how children should be treated; listened to; and above all loved.i do hope that during the twenty nine years i worked with young people i managed to do this.she certainly was my role model thank you frances. i do remember jane england she was like a little doll;curly hair and very cute;she also had a temper on many occasions like many others i hasten to add.i also saw a message re the elliott boys i have fond memories of mark and martin.i am going to try my best to name all the people on the holiday photo i will let you know how i get on.liz x

Hiya Kenny, i remember the cridling stubbs bus, and i remember Jean Raven, lovely long black hair and she was always with her friend, tall girl with blonde hair, think she was called Janice, Jean was very pretty and i think all the boys used to fancy her and Dianne Hiorns was the other one all the lads fancied aswell, do you remember her, she had the long blonde hair, and i was always jealous cos we girls in the home had to have ours short, i hated it, i think Dianes dad was our doctor? he sent me to hospital to have my appendix out.

Re Lynne Patrick,s comments to our Maylyn, i remember all those teachers from school particularly Mr Simpson, he was a good teacher and he lived up Nevison, he could belt you with that slipper though lol!!! Mrs Lightfoot was the old fashioned teacher who did stand tall and slim and wore those horne rimmed glasses, another good teacher though. Was,nt Mrs Garbutt a dinner lady? i think unless i.m mistaken Mr Garbutt her husband was the school caretaker. Does anyone remember the bus that o bring a gang of kids from Cridling Stubbs, my very first sweetheart used to live there! anyone remember Jean Raven? Another memory of a kid, first time i met him i was scared as i had never met anyone with no fingers on one hand, he was called Gavin Sumner who turned out to be a very good student. Could go on forever but time alas has got the better of me, nice to read the stories...Kenny Griffin

hi marilyn, no I didn't get the glasses till I went to senior girls (old senior boys now demolished and morrisons super market is on the land) Cat face was a nightmare she'd scare freddy cruger !!!!!!! Miss Waites the head was a darling she lived here in Ackworth I saw her regular she even met my kids which is nice. I thought Mr Simpson was lovely, yep a little crush I had on him lol, Mr Cardwell was sweet too, I recall, Miss Lightfoot very tall and slender lovely teacher, Mr Garbutt the caretaker and then wasn't there Mrs Appleyard I'm not sure if she was just a dinner lady but she was lovely, very careing, I think and i'm not sure but if Dinah reads this she may be able to enlighten, I think Mrs A used to be the one that got us kids to "well, just try a little bit" then if we still didn't like whatever we had to taste at dinner we could leave it, I'm sure she coaxed Dinah to eat cheese i think????? or that might have been a very shy new girl called louise, coming to mind it was louise as we used to say louis - louise she won't eat cheese. (ignore me i'm ga ga today lol lol thyroid fog) Marilyn I had two brothers brian the blonde, dave the brown hair when he smiled his smile was crooked due to facial palsy, we used to run up carleton road towards ponte,or we could go through snickets and up through crest or swanhill, some times we'd cut across field and the cows used to come running down from rookeries, our brian was scared stiff of cows and used to fair fly across the field, ha ha he fell into a fresh patty one day he dint half stink ! lol lol
Catch you all later. L xx

Hiya Lynne, i rmember mrs. Birdsall, she wasn't very nice was she, and i also remember the chalk and board rubber (ouch!) do you rmember Miss Waites, the headmistress, and Mr. Simpson, he used to give the boys the slipper and us girls he would hit us on the arm with two fingers,(dont know what he did that for) and miss Bell, she was great. Now i'm thinking i have the right person, but did you wear glasses? and you used to run up the snickets behind the science class to go home, and had a brother who i used to like, and i used to try and catch him running home aswell so i could see him, but he was always too quick and had gone before i got round there ha!. I used to sit in class on the table with all the horrible boys and next to me was Linda Grandidge and Malcolm Wild. Well i wont go on incase i have the wrong person, and dont want to bore you to death, but been nice talking to you. bye for now.

With reference to Ken Brook,s whereabouts of a member of staff Aunty Wynn, she was built like a barn door but only about 5 feet 3inches, always wore bright red lipstick and when she was on overnight duty in home 5 occupied the bedroom which was in the passageway to the large dormitory, if i,m not mistaken she lived in Whitley Bridge, does that ring any bells Ken!

I am really enjoying all your stories of life at the homes, you terrors ha ha ha, I had to laugh at Keith and some of his antics, I bet he was mates with my brothers cos they were buggers too ! Poor old James I always remember him just loitering around the corner of the house picking his nose and eating it, near the play ground I think it was near the air raid shelter ??? that used to turn my guts something cruel lol lol , fancy telling him you were that old Keith, serves you right then finding you were dead at that age lol lol !
What really comes across though from all of you is that no matter the circumstances which found you being in the homes, you all have this wonderful extended family feel from being at the homes together all those memories together and shared with eachother.
You brought back memories of those nasty teachers that seemed to take great pleasure out of hitting with rulers,(I guess that's why they were called rulers) I endured a lot of that from Cat face aka Mrs Birdsall at carleton primary, the ode witch ! it still smarts when I think of it. I only ever got the ruler from her,but always across my finger tips, flat of hand and my legs, how nasty she was ! I also recall her being a fantistic shot when wanging the blooming board rubber or chalk at you too, the chalk always came first I suspect that was her gentle warning that if you carried on doing what you shouldn't then you suddenly found you were covered in chalk dust holding your head.
I look forward to reading more of your stories.love to you all xx

Hi
Does anyone remember me or have any photographs of me?
I lived at Eastwell Lodge somewhere around 1975 and I think I was in Home 2.
I remember the park at the back of the houses and I specifically remember the 'PIG BINS' ha ha
I left care at the age of 17 and thankfully have gone on to do ok, despite my reputation for being a rebel, back in the day!
I have done quite a lot of voluntary work with youths, young offenders at Newhall Prison and worked for one or two other organisations.
I am currently studying a degree in Psychology, Criminology and Counselling.....Yes, I know I've left it late as I'm nearly 39...but better late than never.....:-)
I shared my time at Eastwell Lodge with the Mason and the Reynolds children and I also remember Clive Sparks. I came across them all at various times of my childhood as we lived in several of the same places.
A huge coincidence of my time in care is that one of my fellow students (and very close friends) used to be the officer in charge of a few childrens homes in the Wakefield met area...AMAZING!
I am so thrilled that I found this site and would love to know if anyone remembers me???
